Mary Jane Rasmus, 95, of Urbana, IL, died Wednesday, October 9, surrounded by children and grandchildren.. Mary Jane was born in Harding County, South Dakota, to Knute J. and Sophie Tufte. She grew up on the family homestead near Buffalo, SD, graduated from Buffalo High School and continued her education at Black Hills State Teachers College in Rapid City, SD. She married Albert Rasmus August 13, 1947, who preceded her in death. They reared four children Ripley, (Elizabeth), Pastor Robert (Ann), Joan (Edmund Portnoy), and Roy. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Megan, Adam, Zachary, Greta, Rho, Esha and Sophie, and Andrea, and four great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Alexis, Sophie and Dylan.
Mary Jane loved her career as a nursing home bookkeeper, first at Sunset Home in Bowman, ND, and later at the Westhope Home in Westhope, ND, where Albert had been hired as administrator. Her kids often joked that the bookkeeper was sleeping with the boss, but she seldom laughed at that. She was an election night poll watcher for many years and regularly represented her congregation, Trinity Lutheran in Westhope, at the annual synod assemblies. She loved her time with her grandchildren, her church, her weekly coffee parties in Westhope where she shared her famous butterhorns, and most, recently, her endless phone calls with dear friends and family.
A funeral service is scheduled for November 4 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Urbana. Burial will be at a later date at the Cave Hills Lutheran Church cemetery near Buffalo, SD. Memorial gifts may be given to Lutheran Social Services of Illinois.
