Darrell James Susag, 75, passed away July 10, 2019 in Yuma, Arizona. Funeral services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Rhame, ND on August 8, 2019 at 4PM.
Darrell J. Susag was born in Bowman, North Dakota on December 20, 1943 to Eddie James and Anne (Kluksdal) Susag and resided at the farm south of Rhame, North Dakota. He attended a one room county schoolhouse in Nebo Township for grade school. He graduated from Bowman High School in 1961. Darrell attended college at Dickinson State College. Darrell worked for Uncle Harold and Aunt Inga Kelner for two summers in Scranton, ND. Darrell was employed at Skelly Service Station in Bowman, ND and at ALCOA in Vancouver, WA.
Darrell entered the Marine Corp on February 25, 1966, training in California, Tennessee and serving in Vietnam for 1 year, 8 months and 17 days in 1968 and 1969. He served with the 1st Marine Corp Aircraft Wing Command. He received the National Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Combat Medal. He was honorably discharged as a SGT E5 on January 12, 1972, after serving four (4) years active service and time in the reserves.
After his military service Darrell was a Police Officer in Portland, Oregon from Oct 22, 1970 to Aug 29, 1996 and also attended the University of Portland from 1971 to 1976. He received the 25 year service award and retired from the Portland Police Force in August 1996.
He spent his retirement traveling in his RV sightseeing and geocaching, while having a home base in Texas until he purchased a home in Green Valley, AZ in 2018. He loved golfing, spending winters in the desert and summers in the mountains. He loved cars and spent many months in Texas helping restore a 1959 Ford. In his retirement, he traveled throughout most of the United States with Gary and Michelle, his special friend Judy Cook and other friends. He toured Europe with friends, Bahamas with family, and Norway with his family to see the area where his parents came from.
Darrell married Doris M. Hoffman on May 16, 1970 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Rhame, ND, and welcomed her son Thomas to their family. They later divorced in 1973. Darrell married Deborah R. Hudson on June 10, 1978 in Columbia, OR. They later divorced in 1979.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Anne Susag, his grandparents, John and Olida Susag and Martin and Ingeborg Kluksdal, niece & nephews Corey and Carime Seibel and Preston Holecek. His ex-wife Doris and her son Thomas also preceded him in death.
Darrell leaves behind his sisters and brothers, Betty A. Crawford (Roger Raether), Sioux Falls, SD, John M. Susag (Connie), Rhame, ND, Carol S. Nelson, Valley City, ND, Faye L. Holecek (Dale), Anderson, TX, Gary A. Susag (Michelle)Sun City West, AZ & LaCrosse, WI, Kaye S. Seibel (John), Grand Forks, ND and Ilene R. Olmstead (Wade), Garretson, SD; several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles; Goldie Schaaf, Delores (Harold) Schuh, and Peg Boyce, several cousins from the families of Kelner, Schaaf, Silha, Schuh, Arlt and Susag and special friends to cherish his memory. Darrell’s presence will be missed by all who knew him. His laugh, stories, opinions and working and playing alongside him will truly be missed and a life well lived. Life is not measured by the Breaths we take but, by the moments that take our Breath away!
