JoAnn Ballweber was born on November 23, 1932 in Reeder, ND, the daughter of Del and Nora (Hofland) Ballweber. She grew up in Reeder and graduated from Reeder High School. She knew she was going to marry Fritz Schwartz when she saw him at confirmation class with that beautiful head of dark hair. JoAnn worked at Effie Walsh’s home in Reeder as a cook and cleaning lady for room and board when she was 14 until she graduated. JoAnn married Frederick Samuel on November 15, 1951 in Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Reeder. They farmed and ranched in various locations. In 1960 they moved southwest of Bowman where they raised cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and small grains. She especially loved her sheep and tended to their every need. She could kill a rattle snake with one strike of the hoe. JoAnn was very creative and hard working using her hands for cooking, sewing, milking cows, knitting, crocheting hundreds of “scrubbies” and painting, painting and more painting. She never turned down a paint job “EVER”. Her specialties were lefsa, caramel rolls, fresh buns, pickles, salsa and the color “red”.
JoAnns faith was strong and steadfast. Her love was never ending for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, family and friends. Some of her most cherished moments were dancing with Fritz, singing with the family singers, playing pinochle and watching sporting events. Her sense of humor and contagious laugh will never be forgotten.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Del and Nora Ballweber, husband Fritz, infant great grandson Eric, sisters; Dottie Oase, Carol Markegard, Lois Schwarzwalter, brothers; Duane Ballweber, Willard Ballweber and Riley Ballweber.
