Frederick “Fred” A. Gerth, Jr., 87, of Bowman, ND, passed away on December 27, 2018 at the Southwest Healthcare Hospital in Bowman.
Funeral Services for Fred will be on Monday, December 31, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bowman Lutheran Church. Pastor Mary Peterson and Pastor Galen Strand will officiate with burial to follow in the Bowman Cemetery. Visitation for Fred will be on Sunday, December 30, 2018 from 12-9 at the Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Home Chapel in Bowman.
Frederick A. Gerth, Jr., was born on January 25, 1931 in Hustisford, Wisconsin, the son of Frederick and Martha (Braemer) Gerth. He was raised on a dairy farm near Hustisford and attended a one room rural country school at Woodland and graduated from High School in Hustisford in 1948. After high school, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. He proudly served his country until being honorably discharged in 1952 as a Staff Sgt. Fred worked for his sister and brother in law on their farm near Max, ND for one year. He then worked in a grocery store in Garrison, ND, during the winter months and on the Garrison Damn during the summer of 1953. Fred met the love of his life Darlene Cumings who was teaching in Garrison at the time. Fred and Darlene was united in marriage in 1955 and moved to Fargo where Fred attended NDSU. He graduated in honors in 1958 with at degree in Agriculture and Education. Fred and Darlene then moved to New England, ND, where he taught vocational agriculture and Science at New England High School and he also taught classes for farmers in the evenings. In 1966 Fred accepted a position with the Soil Conservation Service. After one year of training, Fred was transferred to Bowman as a District Conversationalist for Bowman and Slope counties. Fred continued this work until retiring in 1987. After retiring, Fred helped Darlene who was operating a Greenhouse and Nursery. They both retired from this business in 2000 and they then started enjoying their hobbies; traveling, bee keeping, gardening, hunting, golfing, flying model airplanes and helicopters, coffee and card playing at Cenex. Fred also enjoyed visiting with his kids and playing with his grandchildren. Fred had a pilot’s license from his service days however he gave up flying because of health problems. Fred was a member of and served on the Bowman Lutheran Church Board, American Legion and the Bowman Chamber of Commerce, and the Lions Club. After his retirement, Fred worked part time for Slope Electric where he would read meters; the Bowman Recreational Department doing mowing and lawn maintenance. A lot of his time was helping local friends with their diseased trees and insect problems on their trees and shrubs.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Martha, son Gary, grandson Shad, sisters, Ella, Nina and Lucille and a brother Lyle.
He is survived by his wife Darlene of 63 years of Bowman, children, Ronald (Kara) Gerth of Duluth, MN, Jeffrey (April) Gerth of Helena, MT, Randal (Andrea) Gerth of Seattle, WA, and Jana (Scott) Isbell of Rapid City, SD, 13 grandchildren and brother Gene. Fred is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.
