The Arms of God welcomed Patsy Gwen Grimes, 79, of rural Scranton as she passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Bismarck, ND. Death was due to a stroke and heart attack.
Patsy Gwen Mallgren was born July 6, 1939 at Chillicothe, Missouri to Bess Doris (Darr) and Peter Savinti Mallgren. At age one Bess and Patsy moved to Lakefield, Minnesota. She attended Lakefield Public School completing kindergarten through high school. Patsy graduated from LHS in 1957. Patsy was baptized, confirmed and married at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Lakefield.
Patsy worked as a bookkeeper for Watland International Harvester Implement for three years from 1957-1960.
On November 5, 1960 she married Earnest Allen Grimes and moved to the Grimes Ranch in Harding County, South Dakota. She came up with the name Echo Valley Ranch which is still used for most facets of the ranch enterprises. On August 1, 1961 they moved to Scranton, North Dakota where Allen was employed at the Scranton Equity until July 1, 1962. They then moved back to the ranch and have lived there ever since.
From this union two daughters were born: Stephanie and Allisen.
Patsy worked alongside Allen as much as possible. One thing she especially enjoyed was cutting hay. She said at least she could look back and see she was accomplishing something.
She enjoyed yard and garden work and grew many flowers of which she would take to church every Sunday and also to share with friends. Her faith made her feel that the flowers were a gift from God so was appropriate. She also liked to refinish old pieces of furniture and did a lot of antiques for their home. Patsy enjoyed doing fancy work embroidery, crochet, tatting, knitting and sewing.
One of her greatest blessings was three grandchildren: Riley Gert, Reese Allen and Jaclyn Anna and she enjoyed attending their school sports and activities and watching them grow up into fine young people.
She was a member of the St. John’s Church of Haley, Sons of Norway, Prairie Petals Homemaker Club and the Haley WELCA. A few of her other loves were cats, alpacas, writing poems, fishing and Australia, after taking a trip there in 1990. Most recently an abused toy poodle, Chance, decided she was all his.
She was preceded in death by her mother Bess and stepdad John Schierholz.
Survivors include husband, Allen of 57 years, daughters: Stephanie (Finn) Jensen and Allisen Grimes; grandchildren: Riley, Reese and Jaclyn Jensen of rural Scranton; adopted sister Charlotte Helmer, Belle Fourche, SD and half-sister Linda Hamilton, Orange Park, Florida; special cousins Yvonne “Dolly” Knutson, Minnesota and Patricia Buske, Florida, and numerous foreign exchange “kids” from around the world.
