Johnny Kalina celebrates 90 years May 8. He was born in 1925, in Troy, S.D. His earliest memories are doing chores with brother Joe, Such as milking cows, then riding Shetland ponies two miles to Hart School, until eighth grade graduation. Upon graduation he went to work, at 15 years of age, driving truck for his brother Joey and working construction till he married Geneva Hawk in 1944. At that time they ran the Texaco Bulk Station in Bowman. Shortly after, he bought his first trucks and began a long trucking career hauling grain for area farmers. This business grew into one that owned 18 wheelers and hauled cattle, lumber, hay and whatever the farmers needed. In 1989, Johnny sold the trucking company and purchased school busses, which he helped operate, for the next five years. Geneva was a substitute school bus driver and always loved the opportunity to visit with the kids. Johnny continued to work for area farmers and driving semi trucks until 83 years of age.
Johnny and Geneva were married 70 years on April 29, 2014. This occasion was celebrated with a wonderful gathering of family and friends who traveled many miles to be with them and honor their commitment of Christian love they exemplified to each other. They had a wonderful life and were blessed to raise four children and now have 7 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Geneva passed from this world in Aug. 20, 2014.
Johnny has enjoyed being a member of the Assembly of God Church for 60 years, working as a member of the township board and living and raising his family in the Bowman area.
