The Scholarship Committee of the Bowman Community Chorus is pleased to announce that Harrison Homelvig has been awarded the 2015 Music Scholarship in the amount of $500. Harrison is a 2013 graduate of Bowman County High School and is presently enrolled at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D.
As a student at BCHS Harrison was an outstanding young leader in many extra-curricular activities taking participating in band and chorus as a soloist in both and an outstanding leader in all aspects of the excellent music department, a key member of the drama department, excelled in speech competitions, and was a member of the National Honor Society, and SADD. He was also active in church activities and various community projects. He also toured Europe as a member of the Northern Ambassadors of Music. During his school years in Bowman Harrison also was a valued member of the Bowman Community Chorus for 7 years taking part in the youth choir as a 4th grader and then as an adult member soloing at several of the concerts and also performing with the Saxy Brass at all those concerts.
As a student at Northern State University Harrison has taken full advantage of all music programs available. These include: concert band, jazz band, member of the Marching Wolves Band, concert choir, chamber choir, early music choir, as well as NSU speech and debate team. He has served as president of the National Assn. of Music Educators local chapter, member of Multicultural Student Assn., Camp ReCreation, Alternate Spring Break, and Aberdeen Service Learning Program. All that while working as a NSU Information Secretary, an Upward Bound Counselor, and serving as an NSU Dorm Resident Assistant. He plans to get his degree in music education and go on to a masters degree in guidance counseling to help students to adjust to college life better. The Community Chorus is proud to claim Harrison as an alumnus.
This scholarship has also been given to two outstanding Scranton High School graduates, Tiffany Krinke in 2006 and Megan Case in 2013. The Scholarship Committee also disbursed more funds to the music departments of Bowman County High School, Scranton High School, and Harding County High School. These funds are to be used to help defray expenses for students going to Music Camp. Money was also given this year to the 7 students who will be touring Europe this summer with the Northern Ambassadors of Music to help defray their expenses.
The Bowman Community Chorus has been performing for 55 years in this area and is proud to support music and musicians from the three area high schools. The scholarship can be awarded to a student entering at least their 2nd year of college and pursuing a music related degree. The money is from the free will offerings that the Chorus receives at their annual Christmas Concert and from very generous donations and memorials. The Chorus is very proud to be able to support and promote young musicians in this area.
