Maurice Flatness, 97, passed away August 10, 2012 at the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Center in Bowman where he had resided for the past 7 years.

Funeral Services for Maurice were held at 2:00 p.m. at the Southwest Healthcare Chapel. Pastor Galen Strand officiated with burial following in the Riverside Cemetery, Marmarth, ND.

Maurice was born April 21, 1915 in Box Elder, MT, to Olaf and Karen (Knutson) Flatness and grew up on the family ranch in the foothills of the Bear Paw Mountains. He went to a country school and then on to high school in Big Sandy and graduated in 1933. He played football and helped his team play in the state title game.

Maurice married Adair Johnson in Billings, MT, on April 18, 1942. They moved to Marmarth where they ranched and raised their three children. Maurice enjoyed ranching and rodeos. As a young man he rodeod in Montana and North Dakota. He would ride broncs, bull dogging and calf roping. Maurice always enjoyed the Marmarth 4th of July Rodeo and helped with it for many years.

In 1999, Maurice received the Roughrider Rodeo Rancher Award for people who symbolize the western way of life and was the Roughrider Days Parade Marshall. The North Dakota Stockman’s Association gave Maurice an appreciation award for being a brand inspector for 52 years. Maurice was an excellent card play and a wonderful dancer. He was a member of the Masons and a Shriner.

Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Karen Flatness, grandson, Brent McNeill, three brothers; Kenneth, Kermit and Ole and four sisters; Alice, Aasta, Gladys and Lucille.

Maurice is survived by his wife Adair and son Kent both of Bowman, daughters; Sandra (Dan) McNeill of Chinook, MT and Sonja (Jack) Brock of Placitas, NM, grandchildren; Courtney (Bill) Bell of Chinook, MT, Guy (Pam) Brock of Louisville, KY, Hugh (Hilary) Brock of Albuquerque, NM, Jed Brock of Incline Village, NV, great grandchildren; Mariah, Derek, Hailey and Ryan Bell, Maxwell, Claire and Maisy Brock, brother-in-law Robert (Mel) Johnson of Eden Prairie, MN and numerous nieces and nephews.

Krebsbach/Kulseth Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
