Remembering My Life, by Janet C. Snyder;
I was born on July 15, 1921 in Rhame (a small town in southwest North Dakota) to Geneveive (Hanson) and Oscar Carlson. My father homesteaded on land south of Rhame and also managed the Colombia elevator-later named the Osborn McMillan Elevator. My mother was a homemaker and talented musician, soloist, and pianist. I had two brothers who have passed away. Both were college professors in California.
I grew up in a very happy home surrounded by loved ones, lots of music and friends. My church was always a very important part of my life and I learned to trust the Lord at a very young age. I worked in the local drugstore and soda fountain during my high school days and graduated from Rhame High School in 1939. I attended Valley City State College and graduated with a standard teaching degree in 1942. I taught primary grades and physical education at Underwood School and Will School in Bismarck.
While teaching in Underwood, I met Frank Snyder. We married in Rhame in June 1945 and spent 45 wonderful years together. Frank bought the Robert Tauer farm ten miles west or Underwood and we built our farming and ranching endeavor. We were blessed with two children, Barb S. Robinson and Frank S. Snyder.
Eventually I went back to substitute teaching at the Riverdale School in all departments for many years. In 1969, I began teaching first grade full-time. However, in 1974, my husband said he would call me from Florida the following winter if I were still teaching, as he was ready to become a snowbird. Guess what? I then resigned and that ended my teaching career. Frank and I bought a motorhome and spent seven wonderful winters in Florida. We then decided to move to Arizona and settled there in the winters. During these years, we made three trips to Europe and traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, and various other places in the United States and Canada. We were ardent square dancers and included that in many of our trips. Frank passed away suddenly in 1991, but I continued to go to Arizona in the winters for twelve years.
I have always enjoyed working on the farm, driving trucks and helping where I could. I did all the book work for our farm, helped raise chickens, check cattle, etc. Oh, yes, cook for hired men too. I loved to knit, do crafts, play cards and games, and enjoyed music and traveling. I was a member of the Alexander Presbyterian Church in Underwood and later the McCabe United Methodist Church in Bismarck, ND.
I spent several summers on my son-in-law’s farm, then moved to an apartment in Underwood. In 2001, I moved to the Waterford Retirement Community in Bismarck. I enjoyed volunteering in the general store and playing cards many nights each week. The Waterford staff and residents became my second family. In 2011, I moved to the Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood for health reasons and met many kind and caring people.
I was preceded in death by my parents, husband, two brothers, and an infant son, Donald Marvin Snyder. Survivors include my daughter, Barbara (Stephen) Robinson, Coleharbor, ND; Frank S. (Vickie) Snyder, Spring City, TN; four grandchildren, Donald Robinson, Underwood, Stephanie Robinson, Grand Forks, Ashley Snyder, Spring City, TN, & Cynthia Snyder, Knoxville, TN; and many nieces and nephews.
