2018 is looming right around the corner and we all know what that means: New year, new me. It’s so easy to set your goals at the beginning of the year, it’s a fresh start, a clean slate if you will, that really sets the tone of what you want to accomplish.

The most popular resolution most people make year after year is weight loss. And that’s very understandable as the majority of people really do want to be healthy and feel good about themselves, especially after coming off the last couple months of the year. In October, you’re trickin’ for treats, in November you’re stuffin’ turkeys, and in December you’re crackin’ nuts. It’s a relentless onslaught of naughty even when you’re trying to be nice. At the end of the year the only Christmas bonus you see is on the scale and your pants seem to mimic that of the Grinch’s heart; two sizes too small.
With all the odds stacked up against you, it’s comforting to know that your local health agencies are here to help you get back on the wagon…or sleigh.
Tara Bieber RN of the Southwestern District Health Unit and Patty Ness RN of West River Health Services encourage the community to get a jump start on their new year’s resolution by making some small, yet effective changes. With a little guidance with your meals you could be well on your way to reaching your goal! As we all know, summer bodies are built in the winter.
Bieber and Ness shared that substituting and exchanging ingredients in your holiday recipes is a great way skip on calories but not on taste. For instance, you can substitute spices and herbs over sugar and salt or grab some skim evaporated milk instead of that heavy cream. Another example: Exchanging pumpkin pie for a bowl of sweet fruit is not only more colorful, but is healthier as well.

“Christmas Tortilla Roll-Ups”
1 tub garden veggie cream cheese
4 large (burrito size) tortillas
1 red bell pepper, finely diced
4 green onions, white and green parts, finely diced
6 slices of bacon, cooked, drained and crumbled
Spread cream cheese over tortillas (all the way to edges) covering in a thin layer. Sprinkle peppers, onions and bacon evenly among the tortillas. Starting at one edge roll tightly. Wrap in saran wrap, refrigerate until needed. Slice in 1” slices and serve.
