Agriculturist of the Year

Mr. Steve Brooks has been named as the 92nd Little International Agriculturist of the Year. This honor is awarded by the North Dakota State University Saddle and Sirloin club to recognize deserving individuals of their work in North Dakota agriculture.
Steve and his wife April along with their three daughters, Calli, Cassi, and Skeeter, live in Bowman, ND. Together with Steve’s brother and his wife, they operate Brooks Chalky Butte Ranch. On the ranch, they raise registered Angus cattle and a variety of crops including corn, wheat, and lentils. Brooks Chalky Butte Ranch has been in operation since 1904. Steve’s children are the sixth generation on the family ranch.
Besides being a North Dakota livestock producer, Steve has influenced North Dakota Agriculture through several organization leadership positions. These include the Slope County Crop Improvement Association, Slope County Fair board, and he has been the Slope County Fair livestock superintendent for fifteen years. He has served two terms on ND Angus Association board, two terms on ND Beef Commission, and two terms as a director on the ND Stockmen’s Association board; Steve acted as president of all these organizations at one point in his involvement. He spent four years on the Meat Export Federation representing ND, and Steve served eight years on the Certified Angus Beef board, including two years as president. He has served six years on the ND brand board, is president of the ND Stockmen’s Foundation, and he is a trustee for the ND Cowboy Hall of Fame. He served as a chute boss for the ND State High School Rodeo for fifteen years and judged rodeos for Slope Summer Circuit Rodeo for ten years.
Agriculturist of the Year is awarded to individuals with the utmost integrity and dedication to North Dakota agriculture. These individuals have made an impact not only through their work in the industry, but also through their service to many organizations and associations that shape agriculture and represent producers throughout the state. Recipients of this award act as a role model for the students of the Saddle and Sirloin club to follow in their own endeavors. Steve Brooks will be recognized as the NDSU Saddle and Sirloin club’s 92nd Little International Agriculturist of the Year at a banquet in his honor during the Little International February 9th, 2018.
