Sophie Maliske was born to Micheal and Apollonia (Porvziknek) Maliske on Sept. 30,1923 on the family farm east of Ludlow, S.D. She was one of 11 children. Situated in the middle of all of them, she learned how to work and care for people.

Sophie received her elementary education at Norbeck Country School and graduated high school from Camp Crook, S.D.

Sophie met her future husband, Walter Sarsland, at a high school dance. They married on Nov. 1, 1942 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Cox, S.D. Five days later, Walt left for the Army and overseas for the next three years. During that time, Sophie went to Denver, Colo. and worked at Woolworth’s. Then she moved to Seattle, Wash., where she worked as a wing riveter for Boeing Aircraft. This is where she stayed until 1945 when Walt returned.

The couple returned to South Dakota where they made their home and raised their three children. Sophie was Post Mistress in Ludlow from 1959-Sept. 30, 1994. The Post Office was open six days a week, but folks knew they could get their mail seven days a week, day or night, by just stopping in to visit.

Walt passed away in 1989. Sophie and Faye remained in Ludlow until 1995 and then moved to Bowman. Sophie always preferred the country to town life.
